Occassionally some of the NAV Metadata gets damaged and you may want to rebuild/recompile all of the NAV Objects as a first step in troubleshooting this issue. The problem is that there are a few system objects that you can't get to through the object designer. So how can you recompile them as well? Well there is a trick that should do it, as I will explain below in the following Step-by-Step instructions.

When Microsoft added a Web Services interface to Dynamics NAV with the 2009 release, it took a huge step forward in allowing other applications to be integrated with NAV. Additional improvements have been added with the SP1 and R2 releases. But the question that continues to come up with end users is "What can I do with the NAV Web Services or more specifically, what can they do for me?". I am going to give you my top 10 list but please understand that this just scratches the surface of the capabilities allowed by the NAV Web Services.

Here are some interesting ways to populate date fields:

w            The work date (in Navision on the Tools menu)

t            Today's system date (from the computer setting)

    #            Number of the day in the current work month (8)

    c            Closing date

By day of the week:

m, tu, we, th        Monday – Thursday of the current Navision week

f            Friday of the current Navision week

sa            Saturday of the current Navision week

By several different Moth-Day Year options:

122511, 12 25 11, 12-25-11, 12/25/11

By Period:

p6 (calendar year = 06/01/11..06/30/11

Just enter the day:

If today is November 13 and I simply enter 13 into the field, when I move off the field, 11/13/11 will fill in.

Back in the day when software first came out, you had to commit to memory a long list of keyboard shortcuts just to do anything in a program. This made learning to use the software a really painful experience.

Along came graphical interfaces and the mouse to simplify the way we operated software and to shrink the amount of time we needed to learn to operate it. Today we rely heavily on our mice.

Admit it, if you had to put your mouse in your drawer and go back to performing all functions in your software using just your keyboard, you would panic.

Don't be afraid of the keyboard. It can be a really good thing.

I promise that if you perform a lot of work in your software, you can benefit from incorporating at least some keyboard shortcuts into your day.

You will get your work done faster by adding the use of keyboard to navigate the software.

Not convinced yet?

Do you know why software companies are still including keyboard shortcuts in their programs?

Using NAV 4.0 and above?

The Shortcuts menu might be just the thing to help you work smarter so you can be more productive.

Why use it?

TIME!

Who benefits?

Anyone who doesn't use all of the menu items on one or more menus on their screen and users who need access to websites or files quickly.

What are the benefits?

Let's look at what the Shortcut menu can do and illustrate the difference between the 'Old way' and the 'New' way

Are you spending time hunting through the NAV menus when you only use a few features in the menu?

Old way: Hunt through the menu(s) looking for the menu item you need, hoping you will find it.

New way: Go right to the menu choice you want. You get there fast because you setup the layout.

Need fast access to websites you regularly visit?

Old way: Minimize NAV, open your browser, look for the Link in your favorites and click on it.

New Way: One click on the link you created and the website opens.

Do...

Pete said he entered the new item card and the price he entered was $10.00. Sally said she didn't touch anything but the price now clearly says $5.00. No one else uses the system or has access to setup item cards. The cost is $6.00 so you have been losing $1 in profit for every item you sell.

Is he right or is she right?

Without more information, all we have to look at is the Date Last Modified field on the item card but it doesn't tell us if the price was ever $10.00 or, if anyone ever changed it.

I've has this scenario come up several times working with Dynamics NAV.

They key to solving the argument?

CHANGE LOG!

Change log is a feature you can turn on, allowing you track information inserted, modified, and deleted from NAV. You can track as little or as much as you want.

It will tell you who changed what from and to what and when, ending the mystery of the changing price.

To turn on Change log, go to Administration>Application Setup>General>Change Log...

Do you use multiple Companies and/or Databases and have trouble figuring out which system you are currently in? Well if you are using Version R2 and the Role-Tailored Client, there is a helpful solution. You could have a banner like this appear at the top of every window.

Re: MS Auto Bill Pay starting April 1st 2011
Bradley,
You have a way with words. Not sure Microsoft would want you writing their brohcures though. Quoted above "Customers need to pay the Microsoft Enhancement before the due date or face repercussions." Face Repurcussions is definitely a politically incorrect way of saying no grace periods are allowed for being late any longer. In other words the penalty for being late on enhancement kicks in immediately. I am glad that it is only a monetary penalty. We could have to sign over our fist born to enslavement or something.

Re: NAV 2009 Keyboard Short Cut Keys
The one that is always missing in these kind of shortcut lists is the ALT + DOWN ARROW for drop down/ lookup, which is a very smart alternative for F6 in the classic client but also as alternative for F4 in RTC
