Most of us know that you can use the CHANGECOMPANY function in NAV to change the target company for a query in NAV to allow us to perform C.R.U.D. operations against a table in another NAV Company. While that can be pretty handy for reading data, it has several difficiencies when we want to perform an INSERT, MODIFY or DELETE. The biggest difference is that any Triggers that get triggered actually get run against the Company where the code is being executed from and not against the target company. With the advent of the NAV Web Services we have a new alternative.

Occassionally some of the NAV Metadata gets damaged and you may want to rebuild/recompile all of the NAV Objects as a first step in troubleshooting this issue. Excel 2010 added a new functionality called Slicers which is a very smart tool to be used for quick ad hoc reporting in combination with NAV. Slicers can be used as filters for the data you want to be displayed in your table and/or chart. Combined with Excel Pivot tables and charts, this slicer functionality enables you to present the data in a very efficient and user friendly manner.

For one reason or another it may occasionally be necessary to "Delete/Rename" the NAV User Configuration File for a user that is experiencing a problem with NAV. The File Name, Path and what the Configuration file actually stores depends on the client (Classic or RTC) that the user is using.

What does the NAV Change Log functionality do? This is a tool that allows you to track changes that have been made in the database and to help you monitor activity that is taking place in a particular area. You don't want to use this tool; however, for monitoring every table in the database that would cause too much overhead in the system.

Item Charges are used to record the costs for example for distributing, handling or transport of items. Item charges can be used for e.g. insurance, freight cost or custom duties.
The item charges will be added to the direct unit cost of the item purchased or sold, thus will affect the cost of goods sold and profit calculation.

Development work in a live system - although it is not normally fatal to the developer, unless he is working on a missile guidance system, it can be for the database environment that he is working in. I will never forget a developer's t-shirt that said, "Three Dead, One Wounded, Mod Gone Awry"....

Dynamics NAV provides a system to track data changes by the user in the database. To setup change log you will need to be knowledgeable of the Object Designer and the Tables and Fields within those tables that you wish to track. It is suggested that you use the Change Log especially for Setup tables where data integrity is key since a change in some of these tables can affect how the system works.
